For anyone who has once approached Charles Verhaeghe and caught the gleam in his dark eyes, a mixture of acuity, intelligence and that certain je-ne-sais-quoi of mischievousness – the evidence was clear : this man was made of the stuff from which great men are fashioned. Discreet and humble yet as resolute as possible about the course he had set for himself. Charles was driven by a fierce determination that left no choice but to be daring; and capable of a boldness that swept away doubts and ill omens. Charles was infused with the energy required to set things in motion. Nothing less was needed to launch the adventure of Château du Cèdre.

This exceptional cuvée comes from the historic La Mémé plot, which was the first to be planted by Charly. This vineyard originated from a mass selection of Malbec, grafted on-site and by hand in 1958, on magnificent limestone scree. In pursuit of the purest expression of this terroir, the integral vinification, as gentle as possible, comprises 20% whole bunches. To accompany the long and discreet ageing process, exceptional quality wood was sought. This resulted in the use of an extraordinary oak tree, itself 300 years old, which enabled the crafting of three demi-muids. Without added SO2 and on fine lees, this pure juice was aged for two and a half years to achieve a dimension never before perceived in the estate's wines.

A beautiful ruby-purple robe of fine intensity. The nose presents itself openly with lovely ripeness of harvest. Black fruits and plum dominate the fruity register, whilst complexity is brought by spices and graphite. Liquorice along with nuances of charcoal and precious woods complete the aromatic profile. The management of the ageing process is perfect. The palate shows substance with a core that is both full and sapid. A framework of quality tannins extends across the mouth. The whole is pulpy, refreshed by this scintillating fruit of Malbec. The wine possesses a lovely fullness in the mouth. The saline touch of limestone transports us to this mineral sensation in the finish.

This Cahors is a cut above the rest. Complex aromas (violet, incense, menthol, cherry), an elevated and pure style, this wine glides with smoothness and amplitude, concealing its power within a bespoke ageing process. It's beautiful, and obviously very good ! A truly great wine.

This is Jules Verhaeghe's first solo cuvée, created from a plot planted in 1958 by his grandfather, the famous Charly, on the scree that defines the character of Château du Cèdre. A tribute to his ancestor, this cuvée of great finesse reveals the young man's talent through its alert and graceful fruit. At once contemporary, ready to drink and suitable for ageing, this wine is a paragon, just as the GC cuvée conceived by his father Pascal was.
